GEGN STRÍÐI – MEÐ ALÞJÓÐALÖGUM

Fyrir réttum mánuði sótti ég ráðstefnu í Osló um ofbeldið á Gaza og þá friðarkröfu sem yrði að reisa í Mið-Austurlöndum og annars staðar á átakasvæðum heimsins, ekki síst gagnvart þeim sem bera ábyrgð án þess að gangast við henni.
Heiti ráðstefnunnar var: Stop the wars – Strengthen International law.

Ráðstefnan var ein sú magnaðasta sem ég hef sótt, fyrirlesarar framúrskarandi góðir, margir heimsþekktir. Nefni ég þar af vettvangi Sameinuðu þjóðanna þau Fransescu Albanese, talsmann Sþ í málefnum Palestínu og George Katrougalos, sjálfstæðan sérfræðing Sþ um alþjóðakerfið (International order). Úr heimi fréttamennsku töluðu á ráðstefnunni Dominique Pradalié, forseti Alþjóðasambands blaðamanna, Arne Ruth, fyrrum ritstjóri sænska stórblaðsins Dagens Nyheter og ítalska rannsóknarblaðakonan Stefanía Maurizi en hún hefur meðal annars rannsakað hlutdeild Evrópuríkja, einkum Ítalíu, í árásunum á Gaza.
Þekktir fræðimenn voru einnig með erindi, Ola Tunander, prófessor emeritus við friðarrannsóknarstofnun í Osló (vegna vekinda las staðgengill erindi hans), norski fræðimaðurinn Glenn Diesen, rísandi nafn í alþjóðaumræðunni og bandaríski blaða- og kvikmyndagerðarmaðurinn, Max Blumental.
Af vettvangi baráttunnar vekur athygli hve margir gríðarlega öflugir einstaklingar sem beita sér eru gyðingar, sumir hverjir upprunalega frá Ísrael; menn sem berjast af alefli gegn því að samasem merki sé sett á milli gyðinga og Ísraels. Þar nefni ég Haim Breseth, prófessor og einn stofnenda Jewish Network for Palestine in the UK. Hann hefur haft sig talsvert í frammi í mótmælum og þurft að sæta handtöku oftar en einu sinni fyrir vikið. Frá Bandaríkjunum var kominn Robert Lipton frá Jewish Voice for Peace, USA. Tveir magnaðir læknar sem gerþekkja málin og njóta virðingar um allan heim eru breski læknirinn Derek Summerfield, Medical Foundation against Torture, og norski lækninrinn Mads Gilbert en hann hefur haldið fjölsótta fyrirlestra hér á landi um afleiðingar Gaza helfararinnar. Raji Sourani, forstöðumaður Mannréttindastofnunar Palestínu, er magnaður maður í viðkynningu en hann talaði á Oslóarfundinum. Þar var líka Ramzi Raba frá PLO, heimastjórninni á Vesturbakkanum. Marielle Leraand, formaður Rettferdighed og Fred (FOR), nýs stjórnarmálaafls sem er í burðarliðnum í Noregi, ávarpaði ráðstefnuna svo og varaformaðurinn Peter Eisenstein.
Eftir erindin voru umræður og sat þar ásamt mér á sviði til að hafa umsjón með þeim og síðan ályktun fundarins, Deepa Govindarajan Driver en samtök sem við höfum myndað ásamt John Y. Jones og fleirum, Institute for the Public Interest, IPI, stóðu að þessari ráðstefnu ásamt norrænu samtökunum Lay down your Arms, fyrrenfndri pólitískri hreyfingu Fred og Rettferdighed og síðan the European Palestinian Initative against Aphartheid and Settlements.

 

Á myndinni má sjá Ingvild Sandens leika á selló, John Y. Jones stendur álengdar en sitjandi eru læknarnir tveir Derek Summerfield og Mads Gilbert.

Ástæðan fyrir því að ég tel upp öll þessi nöfn er tvíþætt. Annars vegar þykir mér upptalningin sem slík gefa mynd af þessum viðburði – því viðburður var þetta. Hin ástæðan er sú að á slóðinni sem kemur hér á eftir má fylgjast með ráðstefnunni og því sem þar var sagt. Skipuleggjendum þótti miður að blábyrjunin á sellóleik Ingvild Sandnes náðist ekki inn á upptökuna en hún lék Söng fuglanna eftir Pablo Casals og síðan eigin útsetningu á palestínsku þjóðlagi, Ó hve ég þrái, Yamma Mawil al-Hawa.

Margir lögðu hönd á plóg til að gera þessa Osló daga eftirminnilega. Daginn fyrir ráðstefnuna var haldinn kröftugur útifundur við norska þingið til að mótmæla ofbeldisverkum á Gaza og þá skal getið hliðarviðburðar sem var sýning á listaverkum Sabri Al-Quarschi, en áður hef ég sagt frá sýningu á verkum hans í París fyrr á þessu ári. Sabri sat án réttarhalda og dóms í Guantanamó pyntingabúðum Bandaríkjanna í fimmtán ár og hefur síðan verið landlaus í Kazakstan en þangað hentu Bandaríkjamenn honum fyrir tíu árum. Það var Deepa Govindarajan Driver sem áður er getið frá Institute for the Public Interest, IPI, sem hafði veg og vanda að skipulagningu þessarar sýningar. Að öllum ólöstuðum leyfi ég mér að fullyrða að af þessari ráðstefnu hefði aldrei orðið án frumkvæðis og krafta John Y. Jones en hann hefur staðið í fararbroddi um að mynduð verði alþjóðleg friðarbylgja til að sporna gegn hervæðingu samtímans.

AGAINST WAR – FOR INTERNATIONAL LAW

Exactly a month to date, I attended a symposium in Oslo about the genocide in Gaza and the call for peace in the Middle East and other war zones around the world. The call was addressed to all those responsible near and afar.
The heading was, Stop the wars – Strengthen International law.

The conference was one of the most powerful I have ever attended, with excellent speakers, many of whom are world-renowned. From the UN there was Fransesca Albanese, the UN Special Rapporteur on Palestine and George Katrougalos, UN Independent Expert on the International Order. From the world of journalism came Dominique Pradalié, President of the International Federation of Journalists, Arne Ruth, former editor of the Swedish newspaper Dagens Nyheter, and the Italian investigative journalist Stefania Maurizi, who has, among other things, investigated the involvement of European countries, especially Italy, in the attacks on Gaza.

Well-known scholars also gave talks, Ola Tunander, professor emeritus at the Oslo Peace Research Institute, Norwegian scholar Glenn Diesen, a rising name on the international scene and American journalist and filmmaker Max Blumental had a powerful presentation.

There were a number of speakers from the grassroot struggle, speaking from great intellectual heights. It is striking that some of the most powerful individuals criticising Israel´s apartheid policies are Jews, refusing to have Jewish people at large made accountable and responsible for Israeli war crimes. Among them I would in particular like to mention Haim Bresheeth, professor and co-founder of the UK Jewish Network for Palestine. He has been quite prominent in protests and has been arrested more than once for speaking his mind. From the United States came Robert Lipton from Jewish Voice for Peace, USA.
Two doctors, speaking at the symposium, both thoroughly familiar with the issues and highly respected all over the world were the British doctor Derek Summerfield from the Medical Foundation against Torture, and the Norwegian doctor Mads Gilbert, who has given much acclaimed lectures in Iceland on the consequences of the Holocaust in Gaza. Raji Sourani, Director of the Palestinian Centre for Human Rights, is a great communicator who spoke at the Oslo conference. Ramzi Raba from the PLO, the Palestinian Authority in the West Bank, was also there with a powerful speech. Marielle Leraand, and Peter Eisenstein, the chair and vice-chair of Fred og retferdighet (FOR), a new political party that is in the making in Norway, addressed the conference.

After the presentations, there was a panel discussion where dr. Deepa Govindarajan Driver sat on stage together with me to moderate the discussion. We also presented a statement for discussion and adoption.

The reason why I am listing all these names is twofold. On the one hand, I think the listing itself gives a good overview of the event. The other reason is that the conference and what was said there can be followed on the link below and by giving the names of the speakers, readers may find it easier to choose what to listen to in a given moment.

The organizers felt sorry that the opening act of Ingvild Sandnes' cello performance was not recorded from the start as intended, but she played Pablo Casals' Song of the Birds and then her own arrangement of the Palestinian folk song, Yamma Mawil al-Hawa, O my song of longing.

Then it should of course be mentioned – last but not least - that the day before the conference there was a rally in front of the Norwegian Parliament.

Organizers of these events were the Institute for the Public Interest, IPI, Lay down your Arms, Fred og Rettferdighed and the European Palestinian Initative against Aphartheid and Settlements.

Many people contributed to making these Oslo days memorable. There was for example a side event with an exhibition of the art work of Sabri Al-Quarschi, a former Guantanamo prisoner who has been landless in Kazakstan since the US dumped him there ten years ago after torturing him for fifteen years without a trial ever taking place. It was Deepa Govindarajan Driver of the Institute for the Public Interest, IPI, who organized this together with many helping hands. I think it is fair to say that the Oslo events would never have taken place without the initiative and energy of John Y. Jones, who has been at the forefront of creating a global peace movement to counter the militarization of our time.
