KÚRDAR Í KRÖPPUM DANSI VILJA FRIÐ

Á föstudag og laugardag sótti ég mjög áhugaverða ráðstefnu um málefni Kúrda, tilraunir þeirra til að koma á friðarviðræðum við tyrknesk stjórnvöld svo og að tryggja öryggi Kúrda í norðanverðu Sýrlandi – Rojava. Þar hafa Kúrdar verið undir stöðugum árásum tyrkneska hersins og “Frjálsa Sýrlenska hersins”, nú “Sýrlenska hersins” sem hefur verið eins konar regnhlíf yfir hópa sem börðust gegn Assadstjórninni í Damaskus og jafnframt gegn Kúrdum í norðanverðu Sýrlandi. Þessum her hefur lengst af verið stjórnað frá Tyrklandi.

Englar dauðans

Einnig þarf að tryggja samkomulag til frambúðar um friðsamlega sambúð við nýju stjórnina í Damaskus sem komin er til valda með stýringu erlendis frá, einkum Bretlandi, Bandaríkjunum, að einhverju leyti Frakklandi og Ísrael er þarna líka á sveimi með afgerandi hætti. “Við erum tilneydd til að dansa við engil dauðans”, var sagt úr ræðustól og var þar átt við Ísrael, “ekki svo að skilja að við viljum það heldur vegna þess að þetta eru öflin sem við eigum við að etja.”
Einnig kom fram að ekki væri allt sem sýndist í Damaskus þessa dagana og var meðal annars vísað í fjöldamorð sem ekki færi hátt um í fjölmiðlum á Vesturlöndum. Þá kom fram að gefin hefði verið út tilskipun um skerðingu á réttindum kvenna en hún hefði verið afturkölluð að öllum líkindum vegna þrýstings erlendra bakhjarla stjórnarinnar sem kappkosti að skapa henni ímynd sem félli í kramið á Vesturlöndum.

Ráðstefnan var fjölmenn, sennilega vel á þriðja hundrað manns, og var fólkið komið víða að, flestir frá Tyrklandi, Sýrlandi/Rojava svo og vestanverðri Evrópu, einnig frá Mali og Egyptalandi og með fjarfundarbúnaði var ráðstefnan tengd við ræðumenn í Mexíkó, Argentínu og Suður-Afríku.

Á fundinum voru fulltrúar úr forystusveit Kúrda sem nýlega hafa átt ítarlega fundi með Abdullah Öcalan, óskoraðs leiðtoga Kúrda í Tyrklandi og Sýrlandi. Hann hefur verið í haldi á Imrali eyju í Marmarahafi skammt undan Istanbúl, lengst af í algerri einangrun.

Nú eru þau ánægjulegu teikn á lofti að tyrknesk stjórnvöld vilji semja við Kúrda um frið sem þýddi, ef af verður, að ofsóknum á hendur þeim verði hætt; mun ég fljótlega skrifa um hvað þar helst valdi eftir því sem ég hef komist næst um.

Baráttan öll í friðarátt

Það sem var sláandi á fundinum var að finna hve eindreginn friðarviljinn er af hálfu Kúrdanna og er tónninn nánast fullkomin andhverfa við vígbúnaðaræðið sem gripið hefur um sig á Vesturlöndum. Þessi áhersla á frið kom ekki aðeins fram í máli Kúrdanna heldur einnig annarra sem tóku til máls og þeir voru margir - róttækt fólk upp til hópa, ekki síst Ítalirnir sem hafa blóðhita yfir meðallagi eins og kunnugt er. Sá innri kraftur er nú allur virkjaður í friðarátt.

Eldræðu ráðstefnunnar flutti Fouza Afyoussef, fulltrúi sjálfsstjórnarsvæðis Kúrda í Sýrlandi. Hún tók undir friðarhugmyndir Öcalans en sagði jafnframt að konur í Rojava - nefndi þær sérstaklega - myndu aldrei láta íslamska öfgamenn sem nú hefðu hreiðrað um sig í Damaskus, hafa af sér frelsið. Athygli mína vakti frásögn hennar af menntaátaki kvenna í Rojava. Þar hefðu þær hrundið af stokkunum skipulagðri menntun fyrir konur úr öðrum þjóðarbrotum og hópum en Kúrdum einum. Þetta er í mínum huga sönnun þess að alvara býr að baki því að vilja skapa samfélag þar sem allir eigi heima!

Ég hef í því sambandi nefnt að mánudaginn 23. júní verður opinn fundur í Safnahúsinu í Reykjavík með saksóknurunum tveimur sem fluttu málið fyrir þessum dómstól, þeim Jan Fermon og Ceren Uysal. Þess má geta að með þessum tilvonandi gesti okkar stýrði ég hluta Rómaráðstefnunnar í Róm. Situr hún mér á hægri hönd á myndinni hér að neðan og Rengin Ergül mannréttindalögmaður á vinstri hönd. Ceren á hægri hönd er Faik Özgür Erol einn af lögfræðingum Öcalans sem einnig hefur tekið þátt í viðræðum við hann að undanförnu.

HARD PRESSED KURDS WANT PEACE

On Friday and Saturday I attended a powerful and extremely illuminating conference in Rome on Kurdish issues, their attempts to establish peace talks with the Turkish government as well as to ensure the security of Kurds and other communities in The Democratic Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria (DAANES), also known as Rojava. There, the Kurds have been under constant attacks by the Turkish army and the “Free Syrian Army”, now the “Syrian Army”, which has been a kind of umbrella for groups that fought against the Assad regime in Damascus and also against the Kurds in northern Syria. This army, long controlled by Turkey, and Islamist groups in these parts have been associated with ISIS and its offspring Al-Nusra.

Angels of Death

Needed is an agreement that holds on peaceful coexistence with the new government in Damascus that has come to power by help of outside interference, especially Britain, the United States, to some extent France - and Israel is also hovering above and all around. “We are forced to dance with the angel of death,” was said from the podium in Rome with reference to Israel, “not because we want to, but because these are the forces we have to deal with.”
We heard that many stories were yet to be told of terrible misdeeds committed these days and the massacres of Alevites not widely reported in western media were referred to. It was known that a decree had been issued by the new authorities in Damascus to restrict women's rights but that it had been withdrawn, in all likelihood due to pressure from the regime's foreign backers in an effort to create an image that would be acceptable in the West.

The conference was well attended, probably well over three hundred people, coming from many counties, near and far, mostly from Turkey, Syria/Rojava as well as western Europe but also from Mali and Egypt and with help of the internet the conference was connected to speakers in Mexico, Argentina and South Africa.

Attending the meeting were representatives from the Kurdish leadership who had recently had in-depth meetings with Abdullah Öcalan, the undisputed leader of the Kurds in Turkey and Syria. He has been held captive, for the most in complete isolation , on the island of Imrali in the Sea of ​​Marmara just off Istanbul, for over 26 years.

Now there are encouraging signs that the Turkish government may be willing to negotiate with the Kurds for peace, which would mean, if the negotiations were meant for real, that the persecution and deprivation of human rights of the Kurdish population would cease.

What was striking about the meeting was how strongly and sincerely the Kurds are pressing for peace, which of course is in complete contrast to the military fever that has gripped the West. This emphasis on peace was not only expressed by the Kurds, but also by others. The Italians who were many at the conference, representing radical groups, unions and municipalities, spoke with great fervour and conviction as was to be expected since, as is is well known, they have an above-average blood temperature. Their fighting spirit – never-giving -up spirit - is fully mobilized in the direction of peace. There were also powerful trade unionists from UK and elsewhere. Everybody speaking the language of peace.

Fiery speeches

The conference's most fiery speech was delivered by Fouza Afyoussef, a representative of the Kurdish autonomous region in Syria. She strongly supported Öcalan's peace ideas but also said that the women of Rojava - mentioning them specifically - would never let Islamic extremists who had now established themselves in Damascus take away their freedom. I was drawn to her account of the women's educational effort in Rojava. There, they have launched education for women from other groups than the Kurds alone. In my opinion, this is proof that they are serious in wanting to create a society where everyone belongs!

In this regard, I have mentioned that on Monday, June 23, there will be an open meeting at the Safnahusið in Reykjavík with the two prosecutors who presented the case of Rojava before this court, Jan Fermon and Ceren Uysal.
I moderated a part of the conference in Rome together with Ceren Uysal. She is sitting on my right in the photo below and human-rights lawyer Rengin Ergül is on her left. On Ceren's right is Faik Özgür Erol, one of Öcalan's lawyers who has also participated in recent talks with him.

It was Nilüfer Koc from the Kurdish National Kongerss, KNK,  together with two  other organizers of the event who summed up the meeting when it came to a close.

As always when Kurds come together, there is a celebration with singing and dancing, as can be seen in the photo below.
