Menn taka andköf yfir Donald Trump – eðlilega, full ástæða er til þess. Norrænir forsætisráðherrar (þeir sem eiga heimangengt) mæta í morgunmat hjá Mette Frederiksen, forsætisráðherra Danmerkur. Mikið liggur við, Bandaríkjaforseti vilji komast yfir Grænland og fulltrúar hans séu farnir að ræða við Grænlendinga. Eignarréttur Dana sé að vísu viðurkenndur en þar fjari undan með þessu framferði.
Það fylgir sögunni að danski forsætisráðherrann segi Grænlendinga eiga að ráða örlögum sínum, enga aðra. Flesta grunar þó að þetta segi gamla nýlenduveldið með hálfum huga enda augljóst að Danir líta fyrst og fremst á þetta sem málefni Kristjánsborgarhallar sem ræða beri við evrópska valdamenn og að sjálfsögðu NATÓ – sem og hefur verið gert.
Íslendingar voru eflaust heppnir fyrr á tíð að lenda undir yfirráðum Dana fremur en annarra Evrópuríkja sem sölsuðu undir sig lönd fjarri eigin ströndum, ríkja á borð við England, Frakkland, Þýskaland, Ítalíu, Belgíu, Spán, Portúgal eða Holland. Auðlindarán og blóðug spor þeirra víða um álfur hræða.
En lánið hefur ekki leikið við alla þegna Danakonungs á öllum tímum.
Þegar Donald Trump viðrar tilboð sitt um kaup á Grænlandi skyldu menn minnast þess að landsala af þessu tagi er ekki ný af nálinni. Þannig keyptu Bandaríkjamenn Alaska á sínum tíma af Rússakeisara og mörg suður- og vesturríkja Bandaríkjanna komu undir alríkisvald BNA með blöndu af byssupúðri og peningum. Og viti menn Jómfrúaeyjarnar í Karíbahafi keyptu Bandaríkjamenn af Dönum fyrir ekkert svo ýkja löngu síðan. Það var árið 1917. Pabbi var þá níu ára en mamma þriggja ára. Sem sagt, nánast í gær.
Nokkru áður höfðu Danir flutt þangað áttatíu þúsund þræla frá Afríku til að vinna á sykurekrum sínum og mun sá rekstur hafa gefið mikið í aðra hönd. Svo leið þrælaverslunin undir lok og dró þá úr norrænum hagnaði enda vildu Danir nú ólmir selja.
Lengi vel voru fáir tilbúnir til viðskiptanna, en vitað er að reynt var við Þjóðverja og síðan Bandaríkjamenn sem gengu að sölutilboði Dana og greiddu 25 milljónir dollara fyrir eyjarnar.
Síðan hafa Jómfrúaeyjar heyrt undir bandaríska lögsögu, eru með eigið þing og talsmaður þeirra fær að viðra sjónarmið íbúa eyjanna í Fulltrúadeild Bandaríkjaþings.
Sennilega er óþarfi að geta þess að íbúar Jómfrúaeyja voru aldrei spurðir álits á því hvað þeir vildu helst um eigin framtíð, eru þeir þó á annað hundrað þúsund, helmingi fleiri en Grænlendingar eru nú.
Donald Trump er þannig ekki fyrsti Bandaríkjaforseti sem vill versla með lönd og þjóðir og Danir eru heldur ekki að koma að slíkri umræðu í fyrsta sinn.
Það afsakar á engan hátt framferði Donalds Trump. En það minnir á mikilvægi þess að rifja upp söguna, í það minnsta annað veifið, þannig að Evrópumenn séu minntir á það hverjir þeir eru.
Þjóðir í Rómönsku Ameríku og reyndar víðar þekkja vel til þess hve tilskipunarvald Washington getur verið grimmilegt og hverjar afleiðingarnar hafa stundum orðið þegar valdboði þaðan er ekki hlýtt. Okkar heimshluti greinir nú sér til hryllings að þessu valdi er beint að honum sjálfum – „okkur“!
Þá er von að menn spyrji hvar séu hin „vestrænu gildi“ um frelsi og lýðræði og yfir morgunverðarboðinu hjá Mette hefur án efa einhver spurt í forundran hvað valdi því að „okkur“ sé sýnd önnur eins ósvífni, vinaþjóð sem deilir hinum „vestrænu gildum“?
Spurning hvort ekki hefði þá þurft að læða því að á milli rétta að þegar allt kæmi til alls kenni sagan að þessi væru einmitt hin „vestrænu gildi“ – meira að segja líka hin norrænu.
Afkomendur þrælanna á Jómfrúaeyjum væru þar til frásagnar.

WESTERN VALUES IN A NEW LIGHT
People are gasping for breath over Donald Trump – naturally, there is every reason for that. Nordic Prime Ministers are invited to breakfast in Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen´s home. It is urgent. It seems likely that the US President wants to take over Greenland and already his representatives have taken up talks with the Greenlanders. Danish ownership of Greenland is seemingly recognized. But this behaviour is unheard of.
The Danish Prime Minister says that the Greenlanders should of course decide their own destiny, no one else should tell them what to do. However, many people suspect that this is being said half-heartedly by the old colonial power; that the Danes primarily see this as an issue of Christiansborg Palace; an issue to be discussed with European leaders and, of course, NATO – and indeed that has been done.
Icelanders were undoubtedly lucky in the past to have come under Danish rule rather than other European states that confiscated lands far from their own shores; countries such as England, France, Germany, Italy, Belgium, Spain, Portugal or the Netherlands. Their plundering of resources and their bloody footprints across the continents are to be remembered.
But good fortune has not always been with all subjects of the Danish Crown.
When Donald Trump renews his offer to buy Greenland - because this he has done before - one should remember that this kind of land-sale is not new. For example, the Americans bought Alaska from the Russian Tsar at one time and many southern and western states of the United States came under US federal control with a mixture of gunpowder and money. And for those who care to know, the Americans bought the Virgin Islands in the Caribbean from the Danes not so long ago. It was in 1917. My father was nine years old at the time and my mother three. In other words, this was almost yesterday.
Sometime before, the Danes had brought eighty thousand slaves from Africa to work on their sugar plantations; an operation that gave good profit. Then the slave trade came to an end, reducing the Nordic profits. And now the Danes wanted to sell.
For a while, few were willing to do business, but it is known that the Germans were asked, and then the Americans, who accepted the Danish offer and paid 25 million dollars for the islands.
Since then, the Virgin Islands have been under American jurisdiction; they have their own parliament, and their spokesman can present the views of the islanders in the US House of Representatives.
I am afraid that it hardly needs to be said that the inhabitants of the Virgin Islands were never asked what they wanted for their own future, although they number over a hundred thousand, more than two times the present population of Greenland.
Donald Trump is thus not the first US President to want to trade with countries and nations, and Denmark is not engaging in such a discussion for the first time.
That in no way excuses Donald Trump's behaviour. But it does remind us of the importance of reviewing history, from time to time, so that we Europeans are reminded of who we are.
Nations in Latin America and indeed elsewhere are well aware of how cruel and aggressive Washington can be and what the consequences have sometimes been when orders from there are not obeyed. Our part of the world is now realizing to its horror that this power is directed at itself – it is directed at "us"!
It is understandable that people should exclaim: Where are our "Western values" of freedom and democracy? Are they forgotten? And over Mette's breakfast someone is bound to have whispered in subdued amazement what could be the reason for showing "us" such impudence, a friendly nation that shares the "Western values"?
What we, however, all know in our hearts is that history teaches that these were precisely the "Western values" - even the Nordic ones.
The descendants of the slaves in the Virgin Islands would be there to testify that this was so.
